Delivery risk. An Exchange Order is a physical document with no replacement if lost or stolen, at any point before or after exchange.⁴ The official site produces no mailed document; the only thing you need to safeguard is a reservation number in your email.

Payment currency. The official site charges in Japanese yen (JPY) only; your card issuer applies its own conversion rate at billing.³ Exchange Order retailers may price in local currency — Klook showed US$318.55 for the 7-day Ordinary pass at the time of research.⁸

Refund terms if plans change. The official site refunds with a ¥560 processing fee before the pass period starts, and no refund is available once the period has begun.⁵ Of the Exchange Order retailers, only jrailpass.com's policy was confirmed at the time of research: 85% refund on unexchanged passes returned within 11 months, or 100% with optional Cancellation Insurance purchased at the time of order.⁹ jrpass.com's and Klook's policies could not be confirmed.

Eligibility check timing. No matter which channel you use, your passport is checked at the exchange counter in Japan — not at the time of purchase. Buying without first confirming your eligibility creates a financial risk with no recourse if the pass cannot be issued.

Price difference between channels. As of 2026-08-30, the online price at japanrailpass.net and the pre-October agency price are identical. The difference has taken effect in the agency channel only.¹ Whether the online price will also change at a future date is not stated on the current page.

Who Is Eligible to Buy a Japan Rail Pass?

Before entering your payment details, confirm that you qualify. Buying without checking eligibility is a real risk: if you arrive at the exchange counter without the required status, the pass will not be issued; JR Group will not provide compensation for transportation costs incurred during your stay in Japan.²

The basic requirement. The JR Pass is available to foreign nationals entering Japan as "Temporary Visitors" — the entry status typically granted for tourism stays of 15 or 90 days.²

The stamp requirement: automated eGates do not produce one — and without it, you cannot collect the pass. At many major Japanese airports, eGates let eligible passport holders clear immigration quickly but without a "Temporary Visitor" stamp — which you need at the exchange counter.²

The Exchange Order is a physical document; it cannot be emailed, faxed, or replaced if lost.⁴ The pass type listed on it cannot be changed after issue.¹⁰

Step by Step: Buying Through the Official JR Site (japanrailpass.net)

This method involves no international mailing, which makes it suitable for travelers purchasing close to their departure date.

What you need:

• A passport (you will enter the passport number during checkout)
• A credit card issued in the purchaser's name³

Buying for a group. A single transaction can cover up to six additional travelers, all of whom must meet eligibility requirements.³ For age-based child fares, the child's age is determined by the payment date.¹

Payment currency. The site charges in Japanese yen only; your card issuer applies its own rate.³

Site hours. The site is available for purchases from 04:00 to 23:30 Japan Standard Time (UTC+9).³

How to complete the purchase:

1. Go to japanrailpass.net/en/purchase/online/ and choose your pass type (Ordinary or Green class), duration (7, 14, or 21 days), and number of travelers.
2. Enter each traveler's name, email address, and passport number.³
3. Pay with a credit card in the purchaser's name. A reservation number is issued by email immediately after payment.

No document is mailed to you. The reservation number is what you bring to Japan.

Note on same-day pickup. Whether buying on arrival day and collecting the pass the same day is possible has not been explicitly addressed on the official purchase page.³ Confirm with a JR counter if you plan to do this.

Step by Step: Collecting Your JR Pass at a Counter in Japan

Whether you bought through the official site or through a third-party retailer, you collect the physical pass at a JR exchange counter after arriving in Japan — or, for purchases through japanrailpass.net, at certain designated ticket machines equipped with passport readers. The process is the same at the counter; what you bring differs by method.

What to Bring to the Exchange Counter

If you bought through japanrailpass.net: Your reservation number (email or printed) and your passport showing a Temporary Visitor stamp.³

If you bought through a third-party retailer: The physical Exchange Order document and your passport showing a Temporary Visitor stamp.⁴

If you might need a refund later. The JR Group's conditions of use require that you present the original physical credit card used for purchase — not a screenshot, not a digital wallet version — at the ticket counter to process a refund. Virtual cards are not accepted for this purpose.⁵ If you purchased with a virtual card number and later need a refund after collecting the pass, you will not be able to process it at the counter.

When to Choose jrailpass.com

jrailpass.com is the only retailer of the three whose refund policy was confirmed: 85% back on an unexchanged pass returned within 11 months, or 100% with optional Cancellation Insurance.⁹ It is also the only one that explicitly offers shipping to hotels in Japan.⁹

When to Choose Klook

Klook provides free global delivery with a 4-business-day window.⁸ It is a large travel booking platform and may suit travelers who are already booking Japan activities there and prefer consolidating purchases. Before completing a purchase, confirm the delivery format (whether it is a physical Exchange Order or another format) and the refund policy directly on the product page, as neither was confirmed from the accessible page content at the time of research.

Exchange Orders via overseas agencies. When did "October 1" apply? The official price page previously stated: "For purchases made on or after October 1, 2026 (based on the local time at the point of purchase)." This text could not be confirmed on the current price page as of 2026-10-01 [not confirmed on the current page — see the unconfirmed items section].¹ The governing date was the purchase date — not the travel start date. The September 30 cut-off is no longer relevant for new purchases; the higher prices are now the only option on the agency channel.

Child age determination. For online purchases, child age is calculated from the payment date; for Exchange Orders, from the issue date.¹

Three-month validity window. An Exchange Order must be exchanged within three months of the issue date (exchange opens one month before your travel start date).¹⁰ Calculate your exchange deadline from your specific issue date.

When to Buy: A Purchase Timeline

Who Should NOT Buy a JR Pass in Advance Online?

Travelers who have not confirmed their entry status. If you hold a working holiday visa, a student visa, a long-term resident visa, or any entry status other than Temporary Visitor, you are not eligible. Buying before confirming eligibility creates a financial risk with no recourse if the pass cannot be issued at the counter.²

Travelers who plan to use an eGate without realizing they still need a passport stamp. The eGate does not produce a stamp. If you arrive at the counter without one, the pass cannot be issued and there is no fix after leaving the immigration area.

Travelers buying for someone who is not a Temporary Visitor. The pass cannot be issued to Japanese nationals residing in Japan, and it cannot be issued to visitors with non-tourist visa statuses. Purchasing on someone else's behalf does not change the eligibility rules.²

Alternative 1: Individual shinkansen and limited-express tickets. Buy per-journey at JR windows or regional JR booking tools — no eligibility check, no Exchange Order to safeguard. Your Exchange Order has not arrived before departure. Contact the retailer immediately. jrailpass.com offers phone support Monday to Friday, 08:00–20:00 GMT+1, and email support at any time.⁹ Support details for jrpass.com and Klook were not confirmed.⁷⁸ If the Order cannot be resent in time, the retailer's refund policy applies — confirmed only for jrailpass.com (85%, or 100% with Cancellation Insurance, for unexchanged passes returned within 11 months).⁹

Your Exchange Order is lost. An Exchange Order cannot be replaced if lost or stolen, and no refund is issued in this case.⁴ There is no backup option described in the official documentation. This is the most consequential failure scenario specific to the Exchange Order method: the full purchase cost is gone with no recourse. Keep the document in a separate location from your other travel documents as a basic precaution.

Your physical JR Pass is lost after you collect it. A pass that has been issued at the counter cannot be replaced, and no refund is available.⁵
