This article contains an affiliate link to Rakuten Ichiba via Moshimo, a Japanese affiliate network, on the same terms as our general Rakuten Global Express guide. If you follow that link and complete a purchase on Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten Travel (excluding car rental), Rakuten Books, Rakuten GORA, or Rakuten Fashion, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Quick answer

For shipments to the United States, Rakuten Global Express (RGX) turns on one number: the total item value of the package. If that value is ¥410,000 (approximately US$2,500) or less, Standard Express and Surface cannot be selected, and Economy Air is not offered to the US at all — Super Express is the only method, and its price is shown only in RGX's Pricing Calculator. If the total item value is above ¥410,000, Standard Express (roughly 5–10 days) and Surface (roughly 60–90 days) open up at the published rates below. Consolidation of several Rakuten orders into one package is free, and there is no fee to register.

Key facts

  • Only method available at a total item value of ¥410,000 or less: Super Express, priced in the official Pricing Calculator.
  • Standard Express to the US: from ¥4,560 (100 g) and ¥6,350 (1 kg), available only when the total item value is above ¥410,000.
  • Surface to the US: from ¥3,830 (100 g) and ¥5,170 (1 kg), under the same value condition.
  • Economy Air: not available for the United States.
  • Consolidation and shipping insurance: no additional fees, per the official US fee page.
  • Prices checked: 2026-10-30, on the official RGX fee page for the United States.

This page covers the United States only. How RGX works in general — registration, identity verification, what cannot be forwarded, payment methods and Rakuten Points — is covered in the general Rakuten Global Express guide, and this page does not repeat it. What differs for the US is the method availability described below, and it is different enough that reading the worldwide fee summary first can mislead: two of the four methods most shoppers would pick are closed to typical US orders.

The ¥410,000 Rule

RGX's official fee page for the United States attaches the same condition to Standard Express and Surface, in these terms: each is "not available for packages with a total item value of 410,000 JPY (approx. 2,500 USD) or less."

Three consequences follow.

The condition is on the package's total item value, not on weight. A light package and a heavy package are treated the same way if their declared totals fall on the same side of the line.

Most individual orders fall on the closed side. A total above ¥410,000 is roughly US$2,500 of merchandise in one package. Below that line — which covers ordinary purchases of clothing, books, figures, snacks and most electronics bought one or two at a time — the published Standard Express and Surface tables do not apply, whatever the weight.

Free consolidation does not change the side of the line by itself. Consolidation combines packages for shipping; the value test reads the total item value of the resulting package. Whether several mid-sized orders combined into one package are assessed on their combined total is the natural reading of the fee page's wording, but RGX does not state the consolidation case separately, and it is listed under "What we couldn't" below.

The restriction has been in place since July 24, 2026; the background is recorded in the general guide. The fee page itself, checked on 2026-10-30, states the rule without a start date.

Published US rates, excerpts from the official table (checked 2026-10-30):

WeightStandard ExpressSurface
100 g¥4,560¥3,830
1 kg¥6,350¥5,170
5 kg¥16,700¥9,720 (at 5.5 kg in the published table)
10 kg¥33,050 (at 11 kg in the published table)¥15,050 (at 11 kg in the published table)

The full table runs to 30 kg on the official page; the rows above are the ones most often relevant to a single consolidated order, with the published weight step noted where the table does not list the round weight. These rates are usable only for packages whose total item value is above ¥410,000. The US fee page also states that there are no additional fees for package consolidation or for shipping insurance.

How to price a Super Express shipment. Because no table is published for Super Express, the figure comes from the official Pricing Calculator. Its required inputs are the destination country, the postal code, the package weight, and the box size (height, width and length). The calculator's own disclaimer states that optional charges, import duties and taxes are not included in the result, and that the price may differ at actual shipment if a different box is used in packing. The estimate is therefore a shipping figure, not a landed total.

The Order of Operations for a US Order

The flow below follows RGX's official how-it-works page, with the US check placed where it belongs — before the shopping, not after.

  1. Check the value line first. Estimate the total item value of what will end up in one package. At ¥410,000 or less, the method is Super Express by default, so the meaningful pre-purchase check is a Pricing Calculator estimate for the expected weight and box size.
  2. Register and verify. Signing up uses a Rakuten ID, and RGX states in its FAQ that no fee is charged for applying. A personal RGX forwarding address is issued after identity verification, which RGX requires under Japanese law. The general guide walks through this stage.
  3. Shop to the RGX address. Orders are placed with Japanese stores as usual, addressed to the personal RGX address. Purchases from Rakuten Ichiba and Rakuten Books are linked to the RGX account automatically; purchases from other sites are registered manually.
  4. Consolidate, then request shipping. Arrived packages appear in My Page. Consolidation into one package is free. A packing request and then a shipping request complete the process; an Auto Pack & Auto Ship setting can automate both for Rakuten arrivals.
  5. Delivery. RGX's flow page notes that customs duties may apply depending on the item and destination. This article does not compute US duty or tax treatment; the official US regulations page linked from the fee page is the reference RGX itself provides.

When a Different Route Fits Better

Two cases from the general guide apply unchanged to US shoppers, and are stated here briefly so this page stands alone.

The item is on Amazon Japan and eligible for direct international delivery. AmazonGlobal ships it in one step, with no forwarding address, no consolidation decision and no ¥410,000 method restriction. For a single low-value item, that removes the exact step where RGX-to-the-US is most constrained.

Most shopping is outside Rakuten. RGX accepts packages from other Japanese stores, but the automatic order linking is a Rakuten feature; without it, each arrival is registered by hand. Third-party forwarders compete on that workflow and on destination coverage, and their fees are the comparison the general guide recommends in that case.

What does not change the outcome: choosing Surface for a low-value US order to save money (it cannot be selected), or splitting one order into several packages to reach a cheaper method (the value condition is per package, and each resulting package is priced on its own weight).

FAQ

Can a US order under ¥410,000 use Standard Express if it is heavy? No. The condition on the official US fee page is the package's total item value, stated independently of weight. Weight decides the price within a method; value decides whether Standard Express and Surface can be selected at all.

What does Super Express to the US cost? RGX does not publish a Super Express rate table. The price for a given shipment is produced by the official Pricing Calculator from the destination, postal code, weight and box size. Any fixed Super Express figure quoted elsewhere is not from a published RGX table.

Is consolidation really free for US shipments? The official US fee page states there are no additional fees for package consolidation or shipping insurance. Optional packing services are separate and can carry fees.

Does the ¥410,000 rule apply per item or per package? The fee page's wording is "packages with a total item value of 410,000 JPY or less" — the package total. How RGX assesses a package built by consolidating several orders is not stated separately on the page; see "What we couldn't."
